Joint Mobilisation
Joint movement throughout the canine skeletal system occurs as a result of rolls, spins and slides and it is the joint capsule that protects and supports these joints during these movements. The joint capsule surrounds and completely encloses the moveable joint, these capsules are composed of tough, flexible and fibrous connective tissue that connect two bones or cartilages to hold a joint together.
The loss of joint mobility/movement can be as a result of the joint capsule becoming stiff, tight and restricted affecting the normal arthrokinematics motion of the joint. This may be due to Osteoarthritis, Elbow Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia or an issue with a muscle that attaches close to the joint.
Did you know...
Joint mobility is passive, involuntary arthrokinematics motion, (the movement of joint surfaces).
For example:
For the hip joint (the coxofemoral joint) to extend, the pelvic acetabulum will articulate with the head of the femur bone.
For the elbow joint to flex, the humerus, radius and ulna bones will articulate with each other.
